The AOJN membership on facebook has exceeded 100! Is it time for us to plan a real live event?

Party time! ;D Oops, sorry, a little decorum here... Um, yes it is certainly time to plan a dignified gathering of the respected and worth Orthodox Jewish Nurses of the World, nay Universe, for the purposes of scientific and clinical enlightenment, spiritual encouragement, clarification of the matters in the minutiae of Jewish Law in the nursing profession and workplace, and other such worthy pursuits. * * * * * Party Time! ;D BTW, is this cheating? We don't have 100 members on the forum. Does the Facebook page/site/whatever actually mean anything? Congrats on getting folks involved and connected.

Yeh, some reason, I cannot get the members of the facebook group to cross over to here and interact. What's the trick?

OK so where should this event be located? I am voting for Philadelphia, as that is where I am currently residing! ;-) Any other thoughts?

Someplace with a reasonable Jewish community to provide infrastructure, but not a really big city. NYC gives me the creeps and high anxiety. An affordable suburb somewhere, or other medium size community. What sort of event are you thinking? Shabbaton and Sunday stuff?

logistically- I would not go into a Monday as that is asking people to take official vacation. You should arrange appropriate speakers on appropriate topics and I would say an option for Motzai SHabbat and Sunday- or just Sunday. You could probably do Sunday from 11am brunch together (meet and greet..) going into a couple of good speakers. Maybe some of the members want to hold a forum with shared ideas on a current topic... Then end with a dinner together. This way anyone who needs to get back to reality can do it. Perhaps optional babysitting for those who need. Affordable suburb sounds good (though I will attend in spirit not person- for obvious reasons)
MEDIC- Out of sheer curiosity- why do big cities scare you? I couldn't care less where it is held - though Israel is ALWAYS appropriate.....maybe we can hold our own simultaneously... Is it PC to hold it in the SHtachim? :-)

You can also talk to a local Hotel/ Motel/ Inn to give special rates to the attendees. If anyone wants to come for SHabbat, they can eat together and .....party as Medic suggested.... Good Luck with this all...lots of work ahead!!! If there is real interest, you might find sponsors from appropriate companies...make party favors ...sorry...freebies of professional products.... Once you know who is interested in coming, find out what they are interested in... The skies the limit.

Once I am done my classes this semester, real work can begin to happen. This has been part of my vision for the group since the beginning. I just think it could work now because of the increase in members. At least on the facebook group, that is. Corporate sponsors are going to have to be key. Maybe New Jersey is an appropriate place for said convention. That isn't too far from New York or Philadelphia. ;-) Medic, would you fly in? Perhaps on your helicopter? jk. Would you be interested in preparing and leading a workshop?
Thanks all for your comments and suggestions. Keep em coming.

Achot, I simply hate big cities. Always have, always will. Hazal also noted that city life is not good for one's spirit. And that was when cities weren't so overwhelming! It is deep in my psyche. Mind you, ANY city in Israel is okay with me. The kedushah largely compensates for the negative aspects of a city. But when we return home, we'll be looking for someplace no larger thatn Kiryat Sh'monah. A place on the Golan would be nice... A professional meeting in Yehudah or Shomron is always appropriate. Maybe something like davening at Mearat Hamachpela followed by a presentation by Rav Dov Lior and Rav Eliezer Valdman on halachic aspects of modern nursing practice... Rivka, how about seeing if a shul wants to help make this happen? 'The First Annual AOJN International Conference' could be good PR. Any nice shuls in Bala Cynwyd that want to help us out? Achot is probably right that a Sunday one-day event is probably the way to go for a first time. Maybe a Melave Malka for those interested. If I could get the boss (a Jewish doctor, no less!) to approve taking a Learjet out of service for my personal junket, I could fly in. I don't fly rotor these days, though I'd prefer it. But we often fly to the East Coast doing patient transfers. If you're serious about a sadna/workshop, I'd do it if needed. But why are we already scraping the bottom of the barrel? BTW, I'm hoping to attend a medical ethics seminar for the month of July at Shaare Zedek in Yerushalayim. I hope I won't miss our first conference! BTW, if anyone needs a recipe for sufganiyot, I recommend the ones in the Kol BeRamah newsletter. It can be accessed at our website by clicking on the link on the upper left. Shameless plug there (but we need the hits!).

How are you familiar with Bala Cynwyd? Actually, I bet the Lower Merion Synagogue would be happy to host us AND it's a gorgeous venue. Now I need one of the machers on my side. OH I have a yoetzet halachah who could help and run a workshop too! Reb Scher, you are not the bottom of the barrel. You have a unique position of both Rabbi and nurse, which makes you someone that I think most nurses would be totally interested in hearing from!

Medic, that must be some amazing barrel if your on the bottom,..... seriously! I think you would have lots to add!
Panel discussions are also a way to relieve pressure on one speaker...
I hear what you're saying about big cities, OK, and Kiryat SHmona is a GORGEOUS place to live! The way you're describing a meeting a Mearat Hamachpela, makes me want to organize something here simultaneously!!
I too couldn't find the recipe link, but am glad for it, don't want the added calories of the sufganyot, Does anyone have any good recipes for HEALTHY sufganyot? I already make cauliflower latkas (baked...) I know its not the same when it isn't dripping in oil but the powers that be have decided that we must watch our health...
BTW, The newspapers here always rate the various sufganyot,

achot, maybe we could set up a live hook-up. There certainly is enough technology out there. For example, every Sunday morning, Rebbetzin Shira Smiles broadcasts a shiur live in our shul.

I don't really know Bala Cywyd; but we've known people who lived there. I've heard it's a nice community.
Sorry, the recipe is in the winter newsletter. There's a link on the upper left. I think it is the second or third page of the newsletter.
I see a few of the Facebook people are making their way over to here. Welcome to all!
