Am I being taken for a ride? I work in a small, 5 unit facility. The policy is, one nurse per shift may take time off at a time. Meaning, If I'm on vacation, no other day shift nurse can be on vacation as well. It goes by seniority so if I request Jan 1 - 7 and Sheila, who's been there for 10 yrs also wants Jan 1 - 7, she gets it. They let you know if you "got" the time when they put out the schedule for that time period- MAYBE 6 weeks before. Dh and I are trying to take the same two weeks in aug but even if I submit for the time now, I won't know until right before... Is this normal? How do ppl plan these things? Howcan I ever buy tickets, go out of country if I won't know for sure that I can go until right before?

That is a bum deal, but apparently their policy, we dont do it that way or the same nurses will always get the prime vacation time, we take turns if nurse A worked this year Leil Haseder, she will get off next year etc. It doesn't go by seniority. I do understand the one at a time rule. HOWEVER, my advice to you- work on being such an asset to the facility and when you really need a vacation, ask in advance to your DON, explain the extenuating circumstances requiring the time off and pray that she appreciates your work so much she will go to bat for you. Try not to make enemies so that they will not davka ask for vacation in order to hurt you- stay friendly with everyone in your unit, be helpful and if they like you, they will not ask for vacation at the same time as you- a sign of respect. How long are you there?

I've been there a year and a half. Ppl do like me. I'm a hard worker, honest. I work almost ALL non Jewish holidays as I know it helps them. THEY COULDN"T CARE LESS. They ask for favors when it suits them, and show no reciprocity.

I already offered to work X-mas for another nurse on the floor and he said he'd work whatever Jewish holiday I need. That was usually how it worked for us. If we needed off, we found someone to cover for us.

WOW!! You sound so bitter!! Other than this problem do you like working there?, is it convenient in terms of location or whatever? You have to weigh the good and the bad, on the one hand, Baruch Hashem you have a good job, one that you obviously need,..... another poster laments the lack of good jobs in her vicinity. BUt on the other hand you have to decide how important this issue is for you and how long you can handle not having control over your vacation time.
You say that there is no reciprocity- well you can take that as a lesson, do a favor just for the sake of the favor and the good feeling that you get by helping someone, dont expect anything in return. Do because you want to do not because you want something back in return.
I take it this is not a hospital but a LTC? The smaller the facility the less likely you can do what Rivka suggested, as you already posted, in the past yr and a half you worked almost all the non jewish holidays- were you able to take off for the chagim? Did they give you a hard time for Pesach or Sukot etc., if not than they may consider themselves generous by allowing you off the jewish holidays when you need it. Try to remember the reasons you chose nursing- pts dont disappear just because you need a vacation, the DON has to balance their needs first and cant be left short staffed ... her show has to go on 24-7 and that is why she wisely grants one vacation at a time. I dont agree with her prioritizing seniority but that is her prerogative.
Dont be so quick to quit yet, it isn't uncommon for nurses to have to put their work obligations over their private conveniences , I have missed many a simcha because of my work schedule. ( but have been able to make many a simcha for my kids thanks to the salary I earn at my work) Some nurses have to work out taharat hamishpacha in a creative way because of work schedule. This is the nature of the beast.
Remember the serenity prayer and try to stay positive at work, dont take out your frustrations and disappointments on them, it wont help.
Bear in mind the huge chessed that you do everyday at work and may Hashem help you make the most of the vacation time that you DO get!!!

I know I am changing the subject here, but, achot, you get paid well as a nurse in Israel? You must work in the private sector...

I know I am changing the subject here, but, achot, you get paid well as a nurse in Israel? You must work in the private sector... I reread my post, and dont know where I said I get paid "well" or that I work in the private sector.... Satisfaction with salary is totally relative.... yes I am B"H-m satisfied with my salary (Halevy Vyter...may Hashem give us what we need). Ironically I do not personally believe that better paying jobs are in the "private sector". Perhaps I am wrong, I do not compare salaries with others, I believe money is from shamayim,, each gets what he needs, and like the mann, if you gather too much, it will ooze from you till u have the right amount and vice versa. When I said I made smachot with my salary I meant that using my salary we were able to enjoy the family smachot (BarMitzvot and such). May we all be zocheh to use our salary for good things!!!
