Funny, one of our units actually houses our military patients. Last week there were about 12. all have drug and suicide issues.

I've been there a year and a half. Ppl do like me. I'm a hard worker, honest. I work almost ALL non Jewish holidays as I know it helps them. THEY COULDN"T CARE LESS. They ask for favors when it suits them, and show no reciprocity.

Am I being taken for a ride? I work in a small, 5 unit facility. The policy is, one nurse per shift may take time off at a time. Meaning, If I'm on vacation, no other day shift nurse can be on vacation as well. It goes by seniority so if I request Jan 1 - 7 and Sheila, who's been there for 10 yrs also wants Jan 1 - 7, she gets it. They let you know if you "got" the time when they put out the schedule for that time period- MAYBE 6 weeks before. Dh and I are trying to take the same two weeks in aug but even if I submit for the time now, I won't know until right before... Is this normal? How do ppl plan these things? Howcan I ever buy tickets, go out of country if I won't know for sure that I can go until right before?

In short ,I am looking to switch jobs. I currently work in a psych hospital, and while it's OK, I don't want to do it forever, and, as a Jewish woman, reality is that be'h we'll have more children and I don't feel safe working there while expecting. I went to an open house in manhattan yesterday and, I'm not joking, there were HUNDREDS of nurses there, competing for, at MOST, 50 positions. (but it's probably even less than that. There's no hope Out of sheer desperation I emailed a HR officer at a nearby hospital asking for ANY position, ANY shift (just to see) and she basically said, sorry, 2 hospitals have closed in the area, all those nurses are looking for jobs and are quite experienced, I am 200 resumes including yours, I'll call you if I ned you. Yikes. What to do???

I'm looking into this now. I've spoken to someone at Arizona University (or something! ) and that will be a total of about 10,000 in tuition. Is this expensive? Has anyone heard of another program which is good?

I'm interviewing for a med surge position in a hospital tomorrow, and I'd love to get the job. As some of you know, I"ve been doing psych for a year, and would really like to get some "real" experience. This job is part time DAYS which is really hard to find- so, you get the pic, I'd like to make a good impression. Problem is, I'm totally clueless when it comes to these things. Last time, I told the nurse manager that I'm thinking of getting some med surge experience and would then like to go into L&D! How stupid could I get? So any info you can give me would be great- what to wear, what questions to ask, what my "weaknesses" are...
THANKS!

I'm a soft type of person. I don't argue, stand up for myself in a big way, make a big deal out of things. Yesterday a nurse made a mistake and tried to misconstrue things so that it looked like it was my fault. I complained to the nursing supervisor but I'm aghast at this nurse's behavior. Ppl will do anything to avoid being "written up." It's terrible.
Just venting.

Rivka, are you a NP? If you go to the nefesh b'nefesh website, they tell you everything you have to do. It's basically what Chanab said, but they make it a little more complicated. Enough to make me want to think "forget it"

I've been there almost a yr, though I did take a 6 - 8 week maternity leave in the middle, so it hasn't even been that long. It's a psychiatric hospital, and I float around- mostly with the adolescents, but otherwise with the little kids, and, less often, with the adults and the geris. I thought it would be interesting, and I suppose in some ways it is, but it also can get quite dangerous/out of hand at times. I guess psych isn't in such high demand, and thus I've been made charge nurse. When something goes wrong, I"m always terrified bec I'll be held responsible. I have to admit that I'm having a hard time with the population- both the patients and staff. I'm just a born and bred BY girl, and suddenly I have hardly a single frum person to talk to. It's quite a culture shock and when there is no G-d to answer back to about Lashon Harah, -- these ppl talk behind your back at every chance they get. It's terrible! But I'm off topic... anything else you want to know?

...which is exactly how I ended up as a psych nurse. I'm in the process of running away with my arms flailing. I'm thinking of med surge next. How ironic.
