I'm interviewing for a med surge position in a hospital tomorrow, and I'd love to get the job. As some of you know, I"ve been doing psych for a year, and would really like to get some "real" experience. This job is part time DAYS which is really hard to find- so, you get the pic, I'd like to make a good impression. Problem is, I'm totally clueless when it comes to these things. Last time, I told the nurse manager that I'm thinking of getting some med surge experience and would then like to go into L&D! How stupid could I get? So any info you can give me would be great- what to wear, what questions to ask, what my "weaknesses" are...
THANKS!

Dress simply, but businesslike. Better to look a little 'too good', than look like a shlump. You already learned: focus on the job before you. A nurse manager likely wants to know that s/he can count on you for a while, at least. They don't want the hassle of hiring you and having to look for a replacement in 3 months! Share your enthusiasm, your desire to do hesed for your patients, your interest in learning to do a genuinely good job in MedSurg. Ask about the issues that effect patient care and well-being: opportunities to learn and improve patient care, patient and staff safety issues, ratios, who else is participating in patient care (techs, aides, etc.), standing orders, etc.
Don't worry about your 'weaknesses'; focus on your strengths! What have you to offer? You know that when we do a heshbon nefesh for our personal growth, it isn't honest if we leave out the assets. Any proper self-assessment includes equally our assets; not just deficits. What are your positive points? What do you bring that will make a patient's care and stay a little better?
Daven. All is in the hands of the Ribono shel Olam. Surely He wants us to do hesed. Ask him to bless you with success in such opportunities. Sometimes with all the 'hishtadlut', we forget about tefilah. We should daven everyday before we take care of our patients.
That's my two cents.
Good luck!

I know why you asked about "weaknesses." It's because that's a very common interview question. I usually say something that I know I am working on improving and give an example of how. I say that I know I am not naturally organized, so I make sure to write everything down and am constantly looking toward others for ways to better organize my things and my time. I don't know if that applies to you, but if it does, feel free to use it.
The easiest thing to wear is a black/gray/navy skirt and a colored or even white blouse and/or sweater. It's professional and I am sure you have them.
