The email announcement reads:
We are happy to invite you to join us at the National Council of Young Israel/Young Israel Council of Rabbis Annual Rabbinic Conference on February 16th, 2009. This year’s theme is “Navigating the Realities of the Healthcare System: Religiously, Economically, Emotionally, Spiritually, and Medically”. The conference is in partnership with the Metropolitan Jewish Health System, in conjunction with the UJA Federation and Maimonides Medical Center.
The Rabbinic Conference will break new ground in enabling rabbanim, rebbetzins, physicians, chaplains, social workers and caregivers to look more clearly at the difficult realities posed by the healthcare system. Through dynamic lectures, shiurim, and panel discussions with leading experts in halacha, medicine, bioethics, and chaplaincy, participants will learn to navigate the challenges and considerations faced by families confronting serious illness.
In addition, there will be an opportunity for participating healthcare professionals to earn Continuing Education and CME credits.
Rabbi Herschel Schachter, shlita, Rosh Yeshiva of RIETS, will be giving a shiur at the conference, along with noted rabbanim and doctors. Marah mekomos and resource materials will be provided to participants for the preparation of shiur by Rabbi Schachter. Topics to be discussed include end-of-life issues, futile care in halacha, and managing the financial burdens of medical care, among others.
The conference chairmen are Rabbi Zev Schostak, Director of Pastoral Care at the Gurwin Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Commack, Long Island, and Associate Vice President of the National Council of Young Israel; Rabbi Dr. Aaron Glatt, Assistant to the Rabbi at Young Israel of Woodmere, and President & CEO of the New Island Hospital in Bethpage, New York; and Rabbi Dr. Richard Weiss, Mara D’Asra of the Young Israel of Hillcrest, Queens and professor of biology at Yeshiva University.
Lecturers will include Dr. Beth Popp, Director of Palliative Care at Maimonides Medical Center; Rabbi Peretz Steinberg, Mara D’Asra of the Young Israel of Queens Valley and Yoshev Rosh of the Young Israel Council of Rabbis Va’ad Halacha; Rabbi Charles Rudansky, Director of Pastoral Care at Metropolitan Jewish Hospice; and Dr. David Wollner, Director of Palliative Care at Metropolitan Jewish Health System, among others.
Please invite your congregational medical and healthcare professionals to join us. The conference will give them a rare opportunity to become inspired by this unique program and to develop relationships between rabbanim and doctors. This one-day program begins with registration at 9 am, includes lunch and will end with maariv, no later than 6:15 pm.
Also, this year we are offering an exciting pre-conference program exclusively for rabbanim, to be held on Sunday, February 15th. We invite all rabbanim to join us for these additional sessions focused on rabbinic topics. More information to follow.
Please feel free to contact me for more information at 212-929-1525 ext. 113 or by email at rabbis@youngisrael.org.
We look forward to seeing you there.
