I always said that if I stay at my current position, I WILL get fired at some point, no question. That's how it works here. Something happens, hospital is liable, they fire someone as a scapegoat. The ppl who have been in the hospital for ages know how to work the system and have very strong personalities. The other day, when I was charge nurse, a male and female patient allegedly got together in the females bathroom and were intimate. Everyone wants to know how we allowed this to happen. I have to go to the hospital tomorrow and give a written statement. I feel like throwing up. If I get fired, will anyone ever hire me again?

Thanks, Rivka, I will. This situation has happened before and when I think about it, I don't *think* anyone has gotten fired for this specific thing that I know of. I still am nauseous, though. I feel like a bad nurse, and then the other side of me says no, we were doing our best, we're always shortstaffed, they're practically asking for this to happen. grrrrrrr.

oh my goodness, what a nisayon, does your facility have protocol or written policy on this, were you busy with something else at the time (med pass or whatever)? Did you break policy by allowing staff to leave when they should have been working? Were some staff on a smoke break leaving the unit understaffed? I doubt if you are to blame, after all and it wont help you to think that you are a bad nurse. If you act guilty you may as well start filling out the forms for unemployment, If you are feeling nauseous, you really have to pull yourself together, take a deep breath, remind yourself that we are all in Hashems hands, whatever happens, Gam Zu LeTova, I am so sorry that you have to go thru this, you dont deserve it, but it is a nisayon after all. You are not guilty, you are being tested on how well you act under pressure. We always blame being short staffed on these sorts of things. Was it really preventable? It seems to me that this sort of thing is to be expected and other precautions should have been in place. Do the patients involved take medications that might increase the risk for this? Stay calm and only answer the questions you are asked, dont talk too much. If you need a lawyer or union rep- ask for one I will be davening for you

Thanks for your responses. Turns out, so far, (b'h) it doesn't look like I'm going to be fired, they just wanted a comprehensive note on what happened in case they get sued. The girl took the morning after pill, jic so we don' thave to worry about pg. It's almost shabbos, so more later. The things is, we don't know WHEN this happened, if at all. The girl is a terrible historian! So I don't know if we were extra short staffed at the time. Grrr. You know what, though? This is really pushing me to just leave this place and take the other job I've been considering.

to me it sounds like a push in that direction, BTW, How are the requests for days off for the chagim (holidays) coming- you should ask by now- considering the history of problems you have had. Good Luck, we will continue davening for a successful resolution to this. Shavua Tov

what doesnt break you makes you stronger!! actually pts fall and it isn't necessarily a reason to be fired. I hope you found something better!! They obviously didn't deserve you anyway|!

so anon nurse, were you able to find another job? I think the most troublesome thought that came to my mind when 'psyched' posted this topic was "will another institution hire her if they find out she was fired?"

Of course there is life after being fired, sometimes u r better than before having learned a lesson, it all depends on how u "sell" urself, being upfront, upbeat , positive, explaining how u learned ur lesson and dont get so defensive or with longwinded explanations. Also important to prove that you will be a great employee and end the interview saying "You wont be sorry if you hire me" then follow up with a thank you card for the interview. Being Fired is not the end of the world!! It could bemin shamayim.

I did get another job in a hospital afterwards but i never actually mentioned that I got fired because it was never a direct question. I only worked at that job for a short time. Every time i fill out an application i almost have a "panic attack" if they ask if i was ever terminated from a job etc. i never know what to do. I feel like experience of being fired has really made me feel negatively about becoming a nurse. I wish I would have done something (anything!) else.....

plenty of people get fired from jobs who are not nurses. I am not quite sure why being fired makes you regret becoming a nurse.

I politely disagree, Rivka. A teacher who makes a mistake grading a test doesn't get fired. A hairdresser who makes a mistake styling someone's hair- doesn't get fired. There's something very backstabbing about the nursing profession, I'm growing to resent it as well. Everyone's suspicious all the time. It's so so frustrating.

psyched, you have to admit that we have people's lives in our hands. it makes sense that we cannot make mistakes.
