Do you know of any frum nurses in America who actually have to work on Shabbos??? I know numerous frum nurses and other health care professionals (besides doctors) and none of them work on Shabbos. In addition, they can usually work something out with the hospital to fulfill their weekend quota, such as working Sat. night and or Sunday. This may not be the greatest arrangement, but it keeps us from having to worry about being mechalel shabbos.

Yes, a friend from Allentown told me that she worked on shabbos when she lived in Philadelphia as well as a fellow JHUSON alumna who lived walking distance to CHOP worked there on shabbos.

Re: my claim that most rabbanim don't really know what we do, I found this comment in the Tzitz Eliezer. Rav Valdenberg was the rav of Shaarei Tzedek Hospital, an important posek who people turned to from the world over.
This is in Ramat Rahel, his kuntros on Bikur Holim and medical care.
Concerning a doctor's competence or qualifications (the Shulhan Aruch says a doctor needs approval of the beit din), he writes (my translation) "the vast majority (of rabbanim or batei din) haven't a notion about the science of medicine and especially not clinical matters."
This reinforces my notion that we should educate our LOR when we want to confer with them. They'll appreciate it.
