either on vacation or cat's got their tongue. I've had a number of people join the facebook group and post on the wall there, but this is a little more out of the way, perhaps.

glad you joined! How were things at camp?- I did camp nursing for 2 summers and loved it, lots of work- not necessarily the "vacation" everyone makes it out to be but I enjoyed myself. Its my dream to save enuf hours and take off the month from work and do camp nursing again..

We had 178 cases of ILI so we were very busy for the first three weeks and the last week was semi normal. I actually took my boards the day before I went up to camp, and it was a great learning experience! I went to camp for 13 years and the camp that I went to for 8 of those years so it was great to be back. And today I was hired for my second nursing job - yay!

for those of you who, like me, were wondering what "ILI" is, it's influenza-like illness. uh oh!

Thanx! i would love to know...maybe for next summer?

its different from place to place. No real training required beyond your license. It helps to like children. You gain experience with time. Some places are happy to hire a new nurse and others want experienced. Some places have more than one nurse, which makes it easier. Some dont have a doctor at all- just very part time. If you can go with the flow- its for you. It helps to talk to the previous nurse. I had a blast with it!

I was a camp "nurse" when I just had EMT certification. It was fine except for what we thought were scabies!

I've worked for 3 different camps. Most places only cared that you held a nursing license. It does help if you work somewhere the first time with another nurse that knows the ropes. And it varies tremendously by state. PA is very hands off, NY...NOT! Also, size of the camp is a big consideration. 200 kids is nothing compared to 1200 (I've done both) - and are you going to be there alone?

one word of caution, I did one camp nurse job alone and couldn't leave camp grounds because of it making mikve night a little challenging...
