I was attempting to put in an IV the other day and I guess it went into the wrong spot and really hurt. At which point I hear my pt say "baruch atah ado-noi elo-heinu" I looked up shocked at her and said, "you're Jewish?!" She said, "yeh, and when I pray, it means I am really in pain" I successfully started her IV in a different location and we proceeded to have a whole conversation about synagogues and how she was looking for a reform or conservative Sephardic synagogue etc. It was one of the only times I was glad that I didn't get the IV in on the first try. ____________________________________________________ In a similar vein, my patient offered me a taffy tonight and I told him "no thank you, I keep kosher." He said, "Oh, I thought you were Jewish with the skirt and hat, but I wasn't sure. I am Jewish too." Later on tonight he asked for a sleeping pill. When I brought in the ambien, I told him that my mom always used to remind me, if I was having trouble sleeping, that I should say shema. I had to kinda hum it to him, but he proceeded to say shema! I wonder when was the last time he said shema. I told him, "good, now you will have a good night's rest!"

A Segula that really works for me: from Hamodia a few months ago and really works when you cant sleep and have already said K.Shema tell Hashem (don't worry he's listening) " Hashem, I dont want to sleep , I just want to be well rested for the morning" A Talmid tells his Rav, I cant say that as it might be sheker- cause I really DO want to sleep- so the Rav instructs him: "Say, Hashem, my Rav told me to say "I dont want to sleep , I just want to be well rested for the morning!" AND IT WORKED!!! Some of my patients report success as well. Who knows.
On another vein, it is so sad for me that we cant identify Jew to Jew automatically- we need signs like them making a bracha....
BTW hows the hat thing coming along? are you satisfied with your choice of hair covering?

actually, lately I had been wearing a fall with a headband, so no one really knows I am covering my hair unless I tell them. I just happen to have been stressed out yesterday and didn't have time to mess with a shaitel, so I threw on this hat.
