I have been meaning to ask this for a while:
Reb Scher, you mentioned that your wife always covers her hair but often wears pants at work. I have a friend who does the same and was once told by a frum patient's parent that he likes her hair covering and asked her if she was muslim. She was VERY offended. Has your wife had any such comments? I've been asked if I was muslim too, but it didn't bother me. If your wife has heard such comments, did it bother her?
AND I'll open it up to everyone else. Have your patients or their visitors ever made comments about your way of dress. How did you feel about it?

I asked Y. She said she's never been mistaken for a Muslim. She was asked once, though, if she's on chemo. Out here, the number of Jewish women who cover their hair in the whole state could be counted on one hand, so she wasn't too surprised. I, btw, have been asked if I'm a Muslim a few times. I take no offense. At least it isn't idolatrous (we have ALL sorts of religions out here), and the originators-the Yishmaelim ARE our cousins, albeit usually our enemies as well. My former Chief Flight Nurse and best buddy is a Muslim, so....

From the sounds of it, my nursing school is obviously pretty unique in that male nursing students are not rare. I didn't realized how different my situation is. I always had men in my clinical rotations and out of ~120 students there are around 40 men(maybe even more)! So, I was used to having male nurses around, and being in Philadelphia I see male nurses in the hospitals also. But, my friend told me that in her nursing school (she had a much bigger class than me) there were only 5 men, so I guess my school is atypical. Maybe that's because it is a community college (although a very good program). But, I have never met a frum male nurse and I think that's pretty cool. Most of the guys in my program are very good nurses and upstanding people. For the most part, I found that they were very sensitive to my religion and actually tried to avoid running into any halachic problems. It was actually the girls who joked about me being shomer negia. They thought I fell off the moon! But I did give them a few laughs and hopefully a good impression of Orthodox people , I hope so after answering questions all the time about what being Jewish means, and telling the girls again and again that no I never had a boyfriend (I still don't know if they believe me!)

40 guys in 120. I've never heard of such a large percentage of men in a nursing class. We were 5 in a class of 68. I was the only Jewish guy, and the only observant Jew altogether. I didn't have any problems with classmates (though the few Jews couldn't believe I actually keep Shabbat and kosher and took time to daven, etc.). I almost had problems with some staff, but they quickly saw that my resolve meant that I meant business. I was always polite, even deferential, when presenting my needs (Shabbat and Yom Tov off, away for Pesah, etc.); but I never made it an option.

Medic, What a Kiddush Hashem!!! i think that taking a polite, deferential and consistent attitude goes a long way. We all encounter problems along the way- its the way we handle it that makes all the difference!

Hi everyone. It's great to have this forum for frum nurses. So....does anyone know where I can get a maternity scrub skirt?

Penina, maternity scrub tops are not hard to find. A skirt on the other hand, does seem to be a little problematic. You may want to buy a scrub dress a few sizes bigger or turn a pair of scrub pants into a skirt. Good luck!

Just thought of another option- are there any nurses who wear skirts and were pregnant recently in the hosp who you can turn to and ask - maybe they can lend you their gear for the few months that you need it. I asked here- and most girls just buy skirts in a bigger size....or you can have a seamstress make a couple of maternity skirts for you. Do people still wear the kind with loose elastic over the abdomen? My youngest is 14 so what I see today are girls just stretching out their regular clothes and having an excuse to renew their wardrobe later (as if you have the time and money...)

Penina - harder to find these days, but also a good maternity option - regular scrub jumpers which can be worn under a maternity scrub top. Sometimes you can get them from scrub shops as "one smock uncut" or something similar. I had one I got as a hand me down and I ended up passing it on to a good friend who was expecting during nursing school and stopped fitting into her uni skirts.
Just wanted to share an FYI for anyone who wears white tights under their scrub skirts. I recently found George brand types, opaque control top tights at Wal-Mart (!). Quite comfortable and good coverage.
