The rains havent begun yet (I am doing my part and havent even taken out an umbrella but that isnt working this year), So please daven for rain for Israel- Tehillim for this purpose: 17,25,32,51,65,85,86,103,113,120,121,124,125,130,136
As you may know there has not been sufficient rain in the land of Israel this season. The Israeli Chief Rabbinate has declared a day of fasting and prayer for the 22nd of Kislev, Monday, November 29. Whether or not one decides to fast, it would certainly be proper to reflect on increasing merits for Klal Yisrael on that day through one`s own personal conduct. Additionally, there are special tefillos being dispersed, one to be said when the Torah is taken out on Monday or Thursday, one to be said in the Shema Kolenu blessing of Shmoneh Esrai. They can be found at www.youngisrael.org. It would be fitting for people to include these formulas in their Monday prayers. May Hakadosh Baruch Hu look favorably upon us and continue to shower us with His abundant blessings, particularly in Israel.
R Lichtensteins opinion is a minority one, its publicity can not be used to refrain from fasting or empathizing with Israel for its lack of rain. I disagree with it on a personal level. We learn to give charity according to ones standard of living, if a rich person is used to a certain level, we give him charity (as possible) to honor that level that he was used to. While I personally dont have ornamental gardens (brown thumb) I cant blame those who are used to it and will suffer large financial loss if the garden withers. In any event we need this rain for the whole year, ayzehu chacham haroeh et hanolad, (who is smart will foresee the needs of the future- not a great translation-sorry), and we havent had such a dry 'winter' in 70 years!! Besides, daven for those who need the water not just for gardens. Our water bills are through the roof because of this drought! This in itself is life threatening if you dont believe me wait till the number of needy in Israel increases because of the crazy water bills! So again I implore you all to please help us pray for rain!
