Sigh! My hospital is experiencing major monetary losses due to a decrease in admissions and is in total panic mode. First, they announced reductions in force, to the tune of full timers working .9 hours and .8's working anywhere from .7, .6, .5 etc. Nurses didn't like that but we all thought that this was the hospital's effort to avoid layoffs. Now my manager announced that our two floors are merging and there are going to be layoffs from there. Already, some nurses from another med-surg floor were let go. Our Certified Nurse Leader was let go too. This all makes for a difficult work environment, because no one feels safe in their position. I am trying to be positive and daven, but it's really hard. There probably isn't much I can do, besides daven anyway. Just thought I would share.

Iam so sorry, I know that things are tough, and this will affect your family directly. But try not to let it affect your work perfomance. If you want, start looking for a new position. BTW is it legal what they are doing? Who made these decisions? When we had to downsize we got to decide if we wanted layoffs or what you are doing. We had some staff volunteer to leave. Others were offered to expand their responsibilities. Good luck, this is a hard period, try not to involve yourself in office politics.

I don't know if we have a choice because we don't have a union.

You can always check on your own with a lawyer...and not say anything to your boss that you are consulting with a lawyer, dont you have a contract for full time work?

Lots of info being spread around the workplace. Crazy stuff, like there may be 25 nurses let go from our floor, going according to date of hire.
Anyone know about unemployment eligibility?

If it happens, you can ask your Human Resources department what you have to do to be eligible. I will be davening for you...In the mean time, go and be the best nurse you can so they will want to keep you...How long are you working there? What other options are there, are there openings in other departments?

I learned last night that I may be able to get a job in another department, but I am also coming to terms with possibly going on unemployment. It may be the best thing for me right now anyway. thanks!

It may be the best thing for me right now anyway. thanks! Leaves you time to study. Of course, then there's a little matter of paying tuition, which requires income. Hashem should bless you with an easy solution and clarity!

One and all, let it be known: there will be no layoffs. Restructuring and sending nurses to other med-surg floors, but no layoffs. I am happy but kind of disappointed, as I was getting excited about unemployment Just thought it was fair to keep you all informed.
